

Green Man Project at Hale School
It took place at Hale County Primary School and involved 64 eight and nine year old pupils who worked in pairs with the Berkshire artist Sadie James. The task set them was the making of a three-dimentional mask; the base being cardboard and the surface being built up with rolled newspaper for the features. This was covered with papier-mache and had a final layer of coloured tissue paper added before it was left to dry.
The masks were then brushed over with paint, creating a lovely wrinkly effect and when dry were embellished with leaves, flowers, insects and beads for the eyes that the pupils had painted on sugar paper and cut out.
This project was voted one of the most successful of any done by a visiting artist. The teachers of the Year Group were delighted with all the skills the pupils had learnt and we in turn are indebted to Sadie for her inspirational guidance and expertise.
The masks were displayed in the Library and some of these can be seen in the pictures below.
