Preparation for these two themes began on the previous day with the pupils painting a background of random colours on a sheet of A3 paper. The group chosen to do the ‘Bugs’ began by drawing numerous observational pencil drawings of a variety of insects, whereas the group doing the Butterflies chose to copy printed images instead and as a result were the first group to complete the monoprinting process.
Both groups were really excited when all was in place to begin this printing process and after meticulously drawing over the outlines of their chosen bug or butterfly the prepared sheet was gently lifted off and all was revealed. Squeals of delight greeted this discovery. In the case of the ‘Butterflies’ there was some overpainting required to be done on parts of the background, thereby highlighting the ‘subject’ in all its glory. Both these groups completed their project with decorative leaf motifs, using potato prints to do so.
