Young Arts September 2009 - Part 1

Part 2 - Bugs and Butterflies >>

William Cobbett Junior School Project

The fourth and final project of the Young Arts Group took place at the William Cobbett Junior School on 29th September. Sadie James, an artist from Berkshire, introduced the 90 Year 5 pupils, aged 9 – 10 years to the technique of monoprinting. The pupils were divided into 3 groups, with their class teacher, an assistant and a Young Arts volunteer to help them in each case. Each group was given a different theme to explore and these were Trees, Bugs and Butterflies. The actual process of monoprinting seemed quite daunting to begin with but was ably presented to all the groups in turn by Sadie. This proved to be a very worthwhile, enjoyable and interesting project

Part 1 - Trees

This group spent a lot of time studying and sketching different tree varieties before composing their final image for printing. Sadie and the helpers then encouraged them to intertwine and extend the branches of the trees, using charcoal sticks and white pastels to enhance these printed images and bring them to life.

The completed pictures, with the addition of their final touch of added grasses round the base of the tree itself, were delightful and certainly excited the children as they realised to what extent their drawing skills had been extended.
